The meme's origin can be traced back to February 23, 2020, when animal protection advocate John Oberg (@JohnOberg) shared a photograph on Twitter. The image featured Oberg and another man standing in front of a Beyond Fried Chicken sign at a KFC in Charlotte, North Carolina. In the photo, Oberg holds a serving of Beyond Fried Chicken nuggets while the other man points at the sign. Both men exhibit what is commonly referred to as Soyboy Face. The tweet garnered over 450 retweets and 2,100 likes over eight months.

Meme Evolution

The image began to circulate on social media shortly after its initial posting. On February 25, 2020, the Facebook group Occupy Democrats Logic used the photograph in a post that received over 3,500 reactions and 1,900 shares. However, it wasn't until May 1, 2020, that the meme found its footing on 4chan, where an anonymous user shared a traced exploitable in a /qa/ thread. Throughout May, the meme continued to gain traction across various boards on 4chan. The format saw a resurgence in popularity in late August 2020, with multiple users creating their versions. The original photograph was reposted by John Oberg on October 20, 2020, leading to increased attention and new meme adaptations. Subsequently, the format saw another spike in popularity in June 2021 as users began creating new redraws.
