The Boardroom Suggestion Template is a comic series that humorously critiques the disconnect between what consumers truly want and what corporate executives believe they want.
This exploitable comic series satirizes the stark contrast between consumer desires and corporate perspectives, similar to other comics like Corporate Logic and All Right, Gentlemen. Each comic typically opens with an executive seeking innovative product ideas from his team. The first two employees provide safe, conventional answers, culminating in the abrupt dismissal of the third employee who dares to suggest a consumer-friendly idea.
The original comic, titled 'Outlook Oust', was published on the webcomic site Hejibits on December 24, 2012. It depicted a boardroom meeting at Nintendo discussing features for the Wii U console.
The comic gained traction on Joystiq World, which linked to Hejibits on December 29, 2012. On Reddit, user Bluestalker shared a link on January 5, 2013, featuring various adaptations from a 4chan draw thread that started on January 3, 2013. This thread garnered over three hundred replies with around one hundred variations of the comic. Additionally, redditor pogopenis posted an edited version to the /r/funny subreddit on the same day, featuring an MTV executive discussing new show ideas, achieving over 7,500 upvotes. The comic continued to spread, with a Facebook page dedicated to 'Board Suggestion Memes' created on January 14, 2013, amassing over 4,400 likes within a day. Over time, extended and reversed versions emerged, further fueling adaptation and creativity within the meme community.
